The minimum standard of musicianship is AMEB grade 7 or equivalent.

The audition panel consists of the Music Director, concertmaster, and the relevant section principal. Other section principals are invited if the applicant is auditioning for a principal position.

In the audition, prospective members are expected to present a set of orchestral excerpts sent to the applicant two weeks before the audition.

Applicants may also be asked to give a short brief about their musical background and personal goals, expectations of BPO, and how they are able to contribute to the orchestra's community.
